My reviews and impressions of the five most interesting books I’ve read in the last six months.
Emotional Intelligence – D.Goleman – 8/10
The topic of EQ should be a key one for any manager and this book is probably the best comprehensive material I have read on the subject. It explains the general concepts and provides a great foundation for understanding emotional intelligence. A good first book into the topic.
Emotions Revealed – P. Ekman – 7/10
This book is similar to the previous one, but written in a more practical way- it discusses emotions and provides lots of tips to help increase EQ. I would recommend reading it second to “Emotional Intelligence”. I believe it can fundamentally improve communication skills.
The Battle for Uber – M. Isaac – 7/10
An incredible business story, where I often questioned whether the passages could possibly be true. Provides many practical lessons in building a fast-growing business.
A Short History of Humanity: A New History of Old Europe – J. Krause, T. Trappe – 5/10
Less business related, more about the evolution of humanity. Those interested in historical context may find it interesting, but it’s not a business read.
Ball Lightning – L. Cchin – 2/10
I really liked the book The Three-Body Problem by this author, which motivated me to read another book by this Chinese mathematician. Unfortunately, I found 90% of the book boring. Occasionally there was something interesting that made me not give up, but the summary is that it was a big disappointment.
